Did you know that there is a specific way to shop the grocery store for optimal health? It’s this phenomenon called “perimeter shopping.” Who’s heard of it? There is this awesome video that tells you all about it but I can explain too!

So, when you go to the grocery store, it’s best to stick to the perimeter of the store.  This is where you will find the most nutrition packed foods! The reason is because these areas are filled with Whole Foods! Whole Foods contain minimal to no processing so the food is in its most natural state. They are loaded with vitamins, antioxidants, and phytochemicals that make your body smile. This includes peppers, lettuce, apples, oranges, peas, onions, eggs, and lots of other fruits and vegetables.  The further food is away form its natural state, the worse it becomes, nutritionally.  Processed foods are found in the aisles of the stores.  This includes cereals, candies, chips, granola bars, cookies, desserts, frozen meals, ramen noodles, processed meats, ice creams, or pretty much any packaged foods. You get the point, right?

I always try to obtain my main supply of groceries from the perimeter sections.  I may trickle into the aisles if I need a specific condiment, olive oil, or special items requested for a party or baking.  I always like to stick to the 80/20 rule.  Eighty-percent of the time, eat awesome wholesome foods that fuel your body. The other 20% of the time, you can splurge on a treat from time to time.  Restriction is not always a good thing unless you’re a master of this.  Extreme restriction can often lead to binging. So, be kind and allow yourself some leniency but be mindful and eat foods that make you feel good.  You got this!

Cheers,
Taylor
